CBAI to offer weekly Adult RE Forum

One of the questions we UUs struggle with is how to meet the diverse needs of our congregation on a Sunday. Some people want more spiritual and worship elements on Sunday mornings and others look for intellectual stimulation and a venue to express their social, economic, and political concerns.

An Adult RE Forum to explore these and other subjects is being offered beginning Sunday January 7th, 2007 in the Hearth Room. Classes will meet at the same time as Children's RE, 9:30-10:15 AM every Sunday except MLK Sunday (1/14), President's Day (2/18), and Spring Break (4/1 and 4/8) and will continue through the end of May if interest lasts.

The Forum is open to everyone, including youth and young adults.

Our Mission: to provide a forum for church members and friends to explore a wide variety of issues including cultural, social, economic and political concerns in the supportive environment of our church community.

Our Covenant (taken from our 3rd Principle): we affirm and promote acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregation.

A peek at some possible topics:

  • What's the truth about Ordinance 529? How would you vote (have you voted) and why?
  • What is ethnocentricism and how can we become more inclusive of people from other cultures and ethnicity?
  • Are you "patriotic" as judged by a questionnaire given to Japanese Americans prior to their interment? If you were Japanese American, would you have passed this test?
  • The 5000 pound carbon diet
  • Localization, Horizontalizm and related topics
  • Issues of global warming
  • Self-Help case stories
  • Issues of National policies that would affect our future
  • Exploring other religious beliefs and practices

If you have a topic to explore, we ask that you be willing to lead it to make it happen. It should ideally be something that can be explored in one or two sessions. It would provide you with an opportunity to organize and prepare to present and explore your favorite topic while seeking ideas and inputs from others. Those of us who attend as participants do so in order to practice our 3rd Principle. Please email forum@uulosalamos.org with suggestions and to sign-up for sessions. We will be here to provide organizational and publicity help.
